Alberto Muti, Co-Programme Director for Verification and Monitoring, spoke on the margins of the 68th IAEA General Conference on the implementation of nuclear safeguards during crisis scenarios. The side event was organized by Germany in collaboration with the research consortium VeSPoTec (Verification in a complex and unpredictable world: social, political, and technical processes). He explained how the IAEA can prepare itself for future crises by recalling the fundamentals of safeguards implementation, including good communication with member states, the development and deployment of safeguards technologies, and the use of objective information to draw sound safeguards conclusions.
