On 7 and 8 March 2023 in Tokyo, Japan the “Regional Meeting for Stakeholders involved in supporting implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1540 (2004) in Asia” was held. The meeting was hosted by the Government of Japan and supported by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs. NIM Legal Officer Thomas Brown participated in the meeting, speaking on VERTIC’s legislative assistance activities funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting provided an opportunity to engage with partners in the region and to promote the new BWC Model Law which can be used by interested stakeholders to further BWC related aspects of Resolution 1540.

 

He further attended the Working Group meeting of the Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction from 9-10 also in Tokyo. Over the course of the meeting, he engaged with global partners on relevant issues and participated in discussions under sub-working groups to facilitate NIM’s legislative assistance in relation to implementation of the BWC and CWC.
