Over 170 representatives from Central Asia, the Caucasus, Eastern and Western Europe, the United States, various international organisations and NGOs (WHO, OIE, IFBA, EBSA, UNICRI, UNOG, ISTC, VERTIC), participated in a biosafety and biosecurity conference in Tashkent, Uzbekistan last week.

Over 170 representatives from Central Asia, the Caucasus, Eastern and Western Europe, the United States, various international organisations and NGOs (WHO, OIE, IFBA, EBSA, UNICRI, UNOG, ISTC, VERTIC), participated in a biosafety and biosecurity conference in Tashkent, Uzbekistan last week.

Organised by the European Union Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence Initiative (EU CBRN CoE) and the Biosafety Association of Central Asia and the Caucasus (BACAC), the aim of the conference was to support cooperation and coordination at the regional and international level and stimulate discussion on strengthening legislation, policies, capabilities and capacities to mitigate biosafety and biosecurity risks.

Based on its activities under EU CBRN CoE Project 53, VERTIC delivered multiple presentations on legislative implementation of the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention, the World Health Organization’s International Health Regulations, and the Food and Agriculture Organization’s Codex Alimentarius. In addition, VERTIC presented its report on national and regional frameworks for emergency response planning.
