On 18 December, he met with Malawi’s Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority and other stakeholders to discuss options for building national awareness and capacity on safeguards implementation particularly on uranium mining.
Under a grant from the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, VERTIC has been working in various IAEA Member States to strengthen their capacity in nuclear safeguards adherence, implementation and reporting. Malawi has signed several agreements and protocols with the IAEA, which aim to foster the peaceful use of ionising radiation and the application of safeguards in its nuclear and related activities.
Malawi is keen to enhance its capacity to implement its IAEA safeguards obligations in the uranium mining sector—the ‘front end’ of the nuclear fuel cycle—and to increase awareness of these norms and obligations (including safeguards reporting practices) among government decision-makers and mine operators.
