Last week, VERTIC’s VM Programme held a workshop on IAEA nuclear safeguards on uranium mining in Namibia. The workshop was run in collaboration with the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation.
Last week, VERTIC’s VM Programme held a workshop on IAEA nuclear safeguards on uranium mining in Namibia. The workshop was run in collaboration with the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation. The meeting took place at the Namibia Institute of Public Administration and Management Windhoek between 22 – 23 October 2018.
Participants included representatives from the following government departments: Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation; Ministry of Mines and Energy; Ministry of Health and Social Services; Ministry of Agriculture; Ministry of Finance; Office of the President; Namibian Police Force (NAMPOL); Office of the Attorney-General; National Forensic Science Institute of Namibia (NFSI) and the National Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA). The training workshop covered the topic of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation and control of nuclear materials, with a particular focus on IAEA safeguards and their implementation at the national level.
The meeting ended with the identification of several recommendations on the way forward regarding institutional developments, training, and sharing of experiences within and beyond the country. VERTIC is very grateful to the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation for making this valuable collaboration possible. The activities were supported by the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office. From VERTIC’s side, VMP Senior Researchers, Alberto Muti and Noel Stott set up the meeting and delivered briefing materials to the participants throughout the two days. These briefings were complemented by input from national stakeholders.
