Scott Spence, Programme Director for National Implementation, participated in an invitation-only workshop titled “UNSCR 1540 Assistance Database: Use, Lessons Learned and Next Steps”, during 26-27 February, at the Stimson Center in Washington, DC.
The Stimson Center’s UN Security Council resolution (UNSCR) 1540 Assistance Support Initiative, with funding from the Government of Canada, developed an online database of assistance programs and projects related to the prevention of proliferation of WMD. In addition to serving as a “one stop shop” for assistance programs, the database will also provide points of contact for each program to facilitate stronger connections between assistance providers and those in need of assistance.
During the workshop, the participants previewed the features and use of the database itself, discussed how to maximize and ensure use of the database and obtain feedback on the database. Additionally, the participants discussed the larger challenges and lessons learned related to providing assistance to States, from helping States make effective assistance requests to helping donors design effective assistance programs. The Stimson Center will produce recommendations for next steps for the initiative based on results from the workshop.
