On 7 – 8 December 2017, VERTIC in collaboration the Namibian Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation hosted a training workshop on International Safeguards, Non-Proliferation and Control of Nuclear Material in Windhoek, Namibia.
Held at the Namibia Institute of Public Administration (NIPAM) participates included representatives of the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation and Ministry of Mines and Energy. Other entities involved included the Ministry of Health and Social Services, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the President. The meeting also saw representation from the Namibian Police Force (NAMPOL), the Office of the Attorney-General, the National Forensic Science Institute of Namibia (NFSI) and the National Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA).
The aim of the workshop was to enhance the participants’ awareness of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s nuclear safeguards system and in particular the effective implementation of the ‘Agreement between the Republic of Namibia and the IAEA for the Application of Safeguards in connection with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT)’ which has been force since April 1998 and the Additional Protocol to the Agreement which has been in force since 20 February 2012.
Also, the workshop examined Namibia’s role in global efforts to improve nuclear safety and security.
