VERTIC conducts a workshop on national legislation for the implementation of the BWC in Freetown, Sierra Leone
Further to Sierra Leone’s request under Project 3 of the EU Council Decision 2016/51 in support of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) and VERTIC arranged a workshop on national legislation for the implementation of the BWC in Freetown, Sierra Leone on 13-15 September 2017.
Chaired by Mr. Josephus Kongo (Chief Radiation Protection Officer/CBRN Focal Point, Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority of Sierra Leone), the meeting built on a national legislative consultation workshop organized by the Government of Sierra Leone, the Global Emerging Pathogens Treatment (GET) Consortium, and VERTIC from 28-29 November 2016.
VERTIC’s Senior Legal Officer Sonia Drobysz and Legal Officer Cédric Apercé presented the BWC, its national implementation, and tools developed by VERTIC to assist states in this process. Representatives from various ministries and agencies also discussed biosecurity issues, the status of implementation of the BWC in Sierra Leone, as well as Sierra Leone’s legislative process. Ultimately, they agreed on an action plan to foster implementation of the BWC in Sierra Leone.
