Scott Spence, Programme Director for National Implementation, participated in the Workshop in Support of BWC Action Extended Assistance Programmes, which took place in Geneva on 29 March. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together experts from European Union Member States, as well as United Nations entities, international organisations and other relevant stakeholders such as VERTIC, to discuss best practices and appropriate preparations for assistance activities to beneficiary countries. Funds for the extended assistance programmes were made available by European Council Decision 2016/51 in support of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), of 18 January 2016. VERTIC is identified as an expert in the European Council Decision and has been providing legislative assistance in support of the Decisions (previously called Joint Actions) since 2006.

Mr Spence spoke on best practices for successful assistance during the first session. The other speakers were from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, CBRN Risk Mitigation and Security Governance Programme at UNICRI and Center for Biosecurity and Biopreparedness (CBB)/Denmark.
