VERTIC evidence to UK Parliament inquiry into climate change
2004
In January 2004 the European Union (EU) Committee of the House of Lords
called for evidence for its inquiry into EU climate change policy: 'Towards
a Sustainable EU Policy on Climate Change'. VERTIC's
response to this inquiry advocates a cooperative and facilitative
approach to international efforts to tackle climate change. In its submission
VERTIC told the Committee that: 'The EU should continue to show a strong
political and practical commitment to the climate change regime, thereby
building confidence in its future and efficacy'. The submission highlights
the need for states to implement the 1997
Kyoto Protocol's requirements promptly and explains the negative impact
that inaction by EU member states could have on efforts to reduce emissions.
VERTIC's response underlines the importance of reporting and verification
in the climate change regime and also stresses the need to ensure speedy
compliance with the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.
