Implementation of verification in the Republic of Iraq
On 29 June 2007, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 1762 terminating the mandate of the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) and reaffirming Iraq’s disarmament obligations under recent UN Security Council resolutions. Concurrent with its closure UNMOVIC published its ‘Compendium of Iraq’s Prescribed Weapons Programmes in the Chemical, Biological and Missile Areas’. It contains an account of Iraq’s missile programmes and its biological and chemical weapons, as well as assessments by the inspectors of the strengths and weaknesses of UNMOVIC’s verification activities. Sources include various types of imagery, declarations, databases, reports and other documents provided by Iraq. VERTIC’s Iraq weapons inspections database, compiled from the first inspection on 27 November 2002 until the last on 17 March 2003, provides as detailed a record of UNMOVIC inspections as possible at the time using open sources. It has, however, not been collated with the information in the UNMOVIC compendium.
