VERTIC's Senior Legal Officer participates in SE Europe regional workshop on the BWC Seventh Review Conference

VERTIC's Senior Legal Officer, Scott Spence, participated in a 'Regional Workshop for South-East Europe on the Seventh Review Conference of the Biological Weapons Convention' in Belgrade, Serbia during 1-2 November 2011. The workshop was hosted by the Government of the Republic of Serbia and supported by the European Union's Joint Action on the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention and the UN Office of Disarmament Affairs. Participants included delegations from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, FYR of Macedonia, Greece, Hungary, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia, as well as speakers from the UN Security Council's 1540 Committee, the BWC Implementation Support Unit, the UK Government and civil society. 

The workshop opened with an introduction to the upcoming Seventh Review Conference, with a keynote speech by the President-designate, Ambassador Paul van den IJssel. This was followed by several sessions including: national implementation and confidence-enhancing measures; compliance and verification; co-operation, co-ordination and assistance; science and technology; the intersessional work programme and Implementation Support Unit (ISU); and key issues for the Seventh Review Conference.

The Republic of Serbia will be submitting a national paper on the workshop to the Review Conference.
