VERTIC staff complete training at International School of Nuclear Law
VERTIC's Senior Legal Officer, Scott Spence, and NIM/AC&D Consultant, Samir Mechken, recently completed training at the International School of Nuclear Law in Montpellier, France. The ISNL, which is in its eleventh year, is sponsored by the University of Montpellier and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency. Only around fifty of several thousand applicants are accepted each year.
The two week ISNL covers the main aspects of international nuclear law, in particular nuclear safety, radiological protection, radioactive waste management, transport of nuclear materials, physical protection, non-proliferation, environmental protection, regulation of trade, nuclear third party liability and insurance. Scott and Samir's training was the next step in moving forward VERTIC's pilot project on illicit trafficking of nuclear and radiological materials, which aims to develop a joined-up and sustainable legal strategy on the international level to combat these materials. VERTIC aims to complement the organization's existing programme on national implementation of the Biological and Chemical Weapons Conventions (and related aspects of UN Security Council Resolution 1540) with a legislative component on illicit trafficking of nuclear and radiological materials, which are considered by many to be an emerging but concrete threat to international peace and security.
