VERTIC releases brief on 'Chemical weapons detection: inspecting Syria'

Today, as UN inspectors continue to investigate allegations of chemical weapons use in Syria, VERTIC is releasing a briefing paper addressing the identification of chemical warfare agents in the aftermath of alleged attacks.
The brief—written by David Cliff, Russell Moul and Ariane Jugieux—considers the legal and technical aspects of the detection of chemical weapons use, both in the immediate and later stages after an incident is reported. The brief looks at the UN Secretary-General's 'Mechanism for Investigation of Alleged Use of Chemical and Biological Weapons' (as being put into practice in Syria at the time of publication) and also at the various technical tools available to investigators and first-responders.
