VERTIC presents in a conference on Egyptian approaches to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation

On 25 March, VERTIC participated in a conference held at Cairo University on Egyptian approaches to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. The conference was co-organised by the faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University, the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs and the British American Security Information Council (BASIC).

The conference was designed to stimulate discussion on Egypt’s role and strategy on regional and global disarmament and non-proliferation issues in the period leading up to the 2015 NPT Review Conference.

Ambassador Hicham Badr, Assistant Foreign Minister for Mulitlateral Affairs and International Security, gave the keynote speech to the conference—which was attended by diplomatic and nuclear experts from Egypt, in addition to academics and university students. Experts from BASIC, Chatham House, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and VERTIC also participated in the conference.

Dr Hassan Elbahtimy from VERTIC gave a presentation to the conference providing a historical perspective on Egypt’s approach towards the evolution of an international nuclear non-proliferation norm.
