VERTIC participates in Wilton Park conference on preparing for the NPT Review Conference

Scott Spence, Programme Director for National Implementation, and David Cliff, Researcher in the Verification and Monitoring Programme, participated in the Wilton Park conference "Nuclear non-proliferation: preparing for the 2015 NPT Review Conference" during 15-19 December. The conference agenda was divided into seven sessions including: the 2015 NPT Review Conference (Revcon), disarmament pathways and their relationship, the contribution of the P5 process to the Revcon, the changing context of non-proliferation, and the Helsinki Conference and the Middle East WMD-Free Zone. In addition, the participants broke into five working groups on Wednesday to drill down more deeply on Pillars 1, 2 and 3 of the NPT: that is, disarmanent, non-proliferation and peaceful uses. The groups reported back to the rest of the participants on Thursday with the objective that the outcomes could inform the deliberations of the Revcon. There was also an innovation this year: a filmed session entitled "Wilton Park Disarmament Dialogue No. 1: The bargains of 1995 and their implications for 2015", which will be available on YouTube in the new year.
