VERTIC participates in the BWC Meeting of States Parties

Scott Spence, Programme Director for National Implementation, represented VERTIC at the Meeting of States Parties to the Biological Weapons Convention during 14-18 December in Geneva.This was the last of the meetings during the intersessional process (2012-2015) before next year's Eighth BWC Review Conference. 

The States Parties discussed arrangements for the Eighth Review Conference and its Preparatory Committee in 2016; cooperation and assistance, with a particular focus on strengthening cooperation and assistance under Article X; review of developments in the field of science and technology related to the Convention; strengthening national implementation; the biennial agenda item on strengthening implementation of Article VII, including consideration of detailed procedures and mechanisms for the provision of assistance and cooperation by States Parties; and universality of the Convention.

VERTIC warmly welcomed expressions of appreciation and support for the work of the National Implementation Programme from Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Canada, Colombia, Georgia, Uganda, the UK and the US. We also thank the Chair of the 2015 Intersessional Process, Ambassador Mazlan Muhammed, for his kind acknowledgement of the National Implementation Programme's work during 2015 on universality of the Convention.
