From 2 to 6 March, the African Union, United States Department of Defense’s Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) organized a workshop on “Security, the Implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), and Cooperative Threat Reduction in Africa.”
The workshop, hosted by the government of South Africa, brought together over twenty African states, various African sub-regional organisations and NGOs in Pretoria. Yasemin Balci, Senior Legal Officer at VERTIC, presented on the need to adopt a legislative framework to implement the CWC and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540. Her presentation is available in English
and in French
During the workshop, the participating states developed action plans detailing the necessary steps to improve implementation of the CWC at the national level. Many of these national action plans underscored the need to adopt or review legislative measures to implement the CWC by making use of the national expertise and international assistance that is available.
