VERTIC participates in CWC and BWC events during 9-15 April
VERTIC NIM Programme staff participated in several CWC and BWC events during the week of 9-15 April.
Angela Woodward, Programme Director, participated in the 'International Workshop on Developing Practical Proposals for the Seventh Review Conference of the Biological Weapons Convention' in Montreux, Switzerland during 9-10 April.
Yasemin Balci, Programme Assistant, attended the Workshop on Chemical Weapons Convention Protection against Chemical Weapons and Prevention of Terrorist Use of WMD Related Materials, during 9-10 April in Cavtat, Croatia. Yasemin gave a presentation on national implementation of the BWC and how effective legislation can prevent the acquisition and use of biological materials by terrorists.
Scott Spence, Senior Legal Officer, participated in the OPCW's 'Seminar on the OPCW’s Contribution to Security and Non-Proliferation of Chemical Weapons', during 11-12 April in The Hague. In addition to giving a statement on 'Effective Legislative Frameworks for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons Proliferation', Scott gave an interview to the OPCW spokesman, Michael Luhan, available at www.opcw.org.
Scott and Angela Woodward, Programme Director, then participated in the second general meeting of the Chemical Weapons Convention Coalition, during 13 April. The Director-General of the OPCW, Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü, joined the meeting and affirmed VERTIC's role in working with the OPCW on the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention through assistance to States Parties on the introduction and adoption of legislative measures.
Scott and Angela joined Rocio Escauriaza Leal, Legal Officer, in Geneva for meetings of the Preparatory Committee for the Seventh Review Conference of the Biological Weapons Convention, during 13-15 April. The NIM team held bilateral consultations with funder governments and governments wishing to work with VERTIC on national implementation of the BWC.
