VERTIC participates in a BWC legislative drafting workshop in Cameroon
Senior Legal Officer Sonia Drobysz and Legal Officer Cédric Apercé participated in a legislative drafting workshop for the implementation of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) in Yaoundé, Cameroon, from 13 to 15 March 2018.
The workshop formed part of the assistance provided under Project 3 of the EU Council Decision 2016/51 in support of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), implemented by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA)/ BWC Implementation Support Unit and supported by VERTIC ‘s expert legal advice.
The event was convened by the Ministry of External Relations and gathered officials from the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industry, Ministry of Environment, and Cameroon Fire Fighter Corps. Mr Zephirin Emini, UNDP Assistant Representative Resident in Cameroon and Ms Sylvie Limunga Elung, Director ad interim for United Nations and Decentralised Cooperation of the Ministry of External Relations formally opened the workshop.
Further to its ratification of the BWC in 2013, Cameroon adopted a Law on arms and ammunitions in 2016 covering all categories of arms and related activities in the country. It is on this basis that participants and experts discussed ways to improve BWC implementation in Cameroon.
