VERTIC participates in 37th Annual Forum of Parliamentarians for Global Action

Scott Spence, Programme Director for National Implementation, participated in the 37th Annual Forum of Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA). The meeting took place during 30 November to 1 December in San Salvador, El Salvador with the theme of the role of parliamentarians in support of peace and security. PGA is a non-profit, non-partisan international network of over 1,200 legislators in more than 140 elected parliaments around the globe, with the aim to promote peace, democracy, the rule of law, human rights, gender equality and population issues by informing, convening, and mobilizing parliamentarians to realize these goals.

This year's Forum was hosted by the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador and opened by the President of El Salvador. Parliamentarians from over 120 countries, as well as representatives from UNODA (New York), the BWC Implementation Support Unit, UNLIREC and VERTIC, participated in the two-day conference. The discussions and presentations focused on how legislators can work with their governments and international partners to improve universality and national implementation of the Arms Trade Treaty and the Biological Weapons Convention. Scott spoke on Day 2 regarding implementation of the BWC in national legislative and regulatory frameworks. His presentation is available here.
