VERTIC holds a 25th anniversary event in Geneva
VERTIC held a 25th anniversary event in Geneva, which included the official launch of the expansion of its NIM Programme into legislative drafting assistance for the comprehensive implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1540. NIM Programme Director Angela Woodward chaired the event; there were over 60 participants. Statements were made by Ambassador Jo Adamson, Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland for Disarmament and Mr John Griffin, Program Officer, Global Partnership Program (Biological Non-Proliferation), Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada. A keynote address was given by Dr Mohammad Hashimzai, Deputy Minister of Justice, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. He noted the progress that is being made on draft legislation to implement the Chemical and Biological Weapons Conventions, which VERTIC worked with the Ministry of Justice to prepare.
VERTIC's Senior Legal Officer, Scott Spence, also gave an overview of the global and regional status of national implementation of the BWC, and then presented a white paper to officially launch the expansion of the NIM Programme in 2012 into legislative drafting assistance for the comprehensive implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1540.
