VERTIC at Wilton Park
On 5-9 December 2016, Andreas Persbo, Executive Director, attended the annual Wilton Park conference on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. The dialogue assessed challenges, opportunities and prospects for the nuclear non-proliferation regime over the 2020 NPT Review cycle.
The conference devoted considerable attention to both the start of the diplomatic process leading up to the 2020 review cycle - it also assessed the implications of the recent US presidential election for nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.
Later sessions examined disarmament diplomacy after the ban resolution, the future of the Iran deal, North Korea’s nuclear programme, and the prospects for reform and revision of the NPT process.
Mr Persbo spoke in session 11, on the future of the non-proliferation pillar. His remarks focused on IAEA safeguards, and the working climate in Vienna. The session also featured Mr Rafael Grossi, Ambassador of the Argentine Republic to Austria and to the International Organisations in Vienna and Dr Joseph Pilat, National Security Advisor at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
