VERTIC assists at regional workshop in Senegal on nuclear safeguards

Between 22-26 August , the US International Nuclear Safeguards Engagement Program (INSEP) provided a workshop for countries in Sub-Saharan Africa on Additional Protocol and Safeguards implementation.
During the workshop, VERTIC Researcher Alberto Muti delivered a session entitled ‘Best Practices for Implementing International Safeguards Laws and Regulations’. The session described legal and institutional building blocks in the nuclear field and provided illustrative country case studies to show how governments have gone about implementing safeguards.
The well-attended workshop included representatives from Benin, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency also actively participated.
INSEP is run through the US National Nuclear Security Administration and Department of Energy. VERTIC’s participation in the event formed part of our ongoing safeguards assistance and non-proliferation activities, supported by the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office.
