John Carlson joins VERTIC’s Advisory Network

Mr. John Carlson has joined VERTIC’s International Verification Consultants Network (the IVCN). This network advises the Executive Director on strategic issues, and has a role in reviewing all public VERTIC products. From time to time, the network also works as paid consultants to the organization.

Mr. Carlson was the Director-General of the Australian Safeguards and Nonproliferation Office (ASNO) for 21 years. He has been a long-standing supporter of VERTIC, and has often contributed to our publications. His views on the Fissile Material Cut-Off Treaty, in particular, have been influential on our work.

In addition to his post as Director-General, Mr. Carlson served as the Chair of the Standing Advisory Group on Safeguards Implementation (SAGSI) from 2001 to 2006. He has served as Alternate Governor for Australia on the IAEA Board of Governors. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament and the founding chair of the Asia-Pacific Safeguards Network. He is a fellow of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management, and recipient of the Institute’s Distinguished Service Award.

“John Carlson has been a friend, an ally and a supporter for many years”, Mr. Andreas Persbo, VERTIC’s Executive Director said. “His insights and comments have been a great inspiration to me personally over the years, and I am deeply honored to have him as one of my advisors.” His advice will help us further strengthen our knowledge of the IAEA safeguards regime in particular, and international arms control verification in general”.
