The Fourth Review Conference of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) is taking place in The Hague, the Netherlands from 21 to 30 November. The Review Conference takes places every five years and gathers delegations from the Convention’s 193 States Parties to review the operation of the Convention and discuss its direction for the next five years.
VERTIC’s Senior Legal Officer, Yasemin Balci, participated in a meeting of the EU CBRN Centres of Excellence Project 61 in Jakarta, Indonesia from 15 to 16 November 2018.
VERTIC took part in a meeting of the European Safeguards Research and Development Association‘s (ESARDA) Working Group on Verification Technologies and Methodologies, held on November 9 in Vienna. Members heard updates on new technologies and approaches, including the use of open source information to improve Safeguards declarations, then participated in a special session on Verifying the Denuclearisation of DPRK. Senior Researcher Alberto Muti took part for VERTIC, and contributed to the discussion group on verifying the absence of undeclared nuclear material after prospective denuclearisation of DPRK, which focused on how Safeguards approaches could be leveraged for this task.
VERTIC took part in the IAEA Symposium on International Safeguards on 5-8 November. Senior Researcher Alberto Muti presented on VERTIC’s work on capacity building for safeguards implementation and Safeguards-Security-Safety (3S) integration. He also contributed to sessions on innovation in safeguards implementation and on the establishment of effective State Systems of Accountancy and Control (SSAC).
On 1-2 November, the Asia-Pacific Safeguards Network held its 9th Annual Meeting in Vienna. Senior Researcher Alberto attended the meeting to learn about safeguards implementation in the Asia-Pacific region and to discuss VERTIC’s work on safeguards with interested states.
Yesterday, VERTIC, together with the United Nation’s Office for Disarmament Affairs held a seminar on capacity building for nuclear disarmament verification.
NIM Programme Director Sonia Drobysz participated in a Regional Workshop for Central Asian States Parties to the Biological Weapons Convention on scientific and practical implementation issues, in Almaty, Kazakhstan, during 23-24 October 2018.
