VERTIC hosts seminar on ‘scientific and technological capacity for disarmament and non-proliferation’ in New York

On 16 October, VERTIC, together with United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), hosted a seminar on ‘Scientific and technological capacity for disarmament and non-proliferation’. The seminar took place in New York at the United Nations Headquarters during the second week of the United Nations General Assembly’s 2019 First Committee on Disarmament and International Security.

VERTIC at the 2019 Science, Peace and Security conference in Darmstadt, Germany

On 25-27 September, VERTIC participated in the 2019 Science, Peace and Security conference in Darmstadt, Germany. Attended by Senior Researcher Dr Grant Christopher, the conference included over 100 participants from eight difference countries presenting on current research on the interdisciplinary challenges and solutions to questions of international security, the creation of peace and transparency-and trust-building measures, arms control, disarmament and conflict management. On Friday 27th Dr Christopher presented his paper to participants on the impact of 3D printing on the military in a session on New Technologies and Arms Control.

On 26 September, Senior Researcher Noel Stott participated in a Foundation for Strategic Research-hosted seminar on the Hague Code of Conduct against Ballistic Missile Proliferation (HCoC) in Djibouti (City), Djibouti. Co-hosted with the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa (UNREC), the event was titled: ‘Dealing with missile proliferation: one side of the non-proliferation and disarmament regime’.

VERTIC at the 63rd IAEA General Conference

VERTIC Executive Director Andreas Persbo, Programme Director Larry MacFaul, Senior Researcher Alberto Muti and Researcher Elena Gai attended the 63rd IAEA General Conference. The conference was a great opportunity to be informed on the most advanced instruments to strengthen the effectiveness and efficiency of safeguards implementation, safeguards and regional cooperation, as well as concrete future steps to advance gender balance in the nuclear field.

In memoriam: Sir Hugh Beach

We have learned that Sir Hugh Beach, the Honorary President of the Charity, passed away on 4 September 2019 after a short period of illness. Sir Hugh is survived by three sons and one daughter. He was 96 years old.

VERTIC hosts workshop on building capacity in Argentina and Brazil for nuclear disarmament verification

On 7 – 8 August 2019, VERTIC co-hosted with the Nonproliferation for Global Security Foundation (NPSGlobal), a meeting to explore the role of Argentina and Brazil, and particularly, the potential role of Argentinian and Brazilian scientists and technical experts in the development and strengthening of nuclear disarmament verification measures.
