VERTIC event at BWC Meeting of States Parties

VERTIC hosted a side event during the 2009 Meeting of States Parties for the Biological Weapons Convention. At this lunchtime event, VERTIC launched its Regulatory Guidelines for National Implementation of the 1972 BWC and Relatted Requirements of UNSCR 1540.

VERTIC organized a breaksfast event during the 2009 Meeting of Experts for the Biological Weapons Convention.

CLINGENDAEL/VERTIC WORKSHOP ON 1540 IMPLEMENTATION

Location:The Hague
Date: 26-27 March

Clingendael and VERTIC co-hosted a workshop on implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1540 (2004). The event took place in The Hague on the 26 and 27 of March and was by invitation only.

The objective of this workshop was to discuss how national implementation of the obligations of the Resolution might be more effective by comparing 'best practices' and promoting greater policy and technical co-operation and co-ordination among the 1540 Committee and the nuclear, biological and chemical weapons regimes.

SIDE EVENTS AT BWC MEETING FOR STATES PARTIES

VERTIC organized several side events during the 2008 BWC Meeting of States Parties:

BIOSECURITY cONFERENCE

Location: Jordan
Date: 27-29 October

VERTIC co-sponsored the conference "Confronting Biological Threats: Biosecurity, Biological Weapons Non-Proliferation, and Regional Cooperative Mechanisms" organized by the Arab Institute for Security Studies (ACSIS).

This Conference brought together academic experts and practitioners from governments, inter-governmental organizations, academic institutions, civil society and the private sector to discuss and promote effective biosecurity in the Middle East region.

Seminar at 2008 BWC Meeting of experts

VERTIC hosted a lunchtime seminar on 'National Implementation Measures for Effective Biosafety and Biosecurity' during the 2008 BWC Meeting of Experts.

The event took place on 22 August from 13h to 15h at the Palais des Nations (Room XXIII).

Implementation Assistance Providers Meeting

Location: London, United Kingdom
Date: 29 January

On 29 January 2008, VERTIC hosted a technical coordination meeting of legislative assistance providers for national implementation of BWC, CWC, NPT, CTBT, CPPNM and UNSCR 1540. The meeting was attended by intergovernmental organizations working on the implementation of arms control law, representatives of various states and academics.

 

Intergovernmental organizations gave presentations on their legislative assistance activities, highlighting problems encoutered when providing assistance and current needs in this field. Angela Woodward, VERTIC Executive Director, gave an overview of VERTIC's NIM activities, highlighting VERTIC's willingness to cooperate with other organizations providing legislative assistance. In the final session, participants discussed how to foster informal relationships and increase cooperation among assistance providers. The meeting proved to be a good opportunity for participants to learn about each other's work.

Middle East regional workshop

Location: Jordan
Date: 29-30 August

VERTIC held a 2-day regional workshop for Middle East states on 'Approaches to national legislation for nuclear, biological and chemical weapons agreements' at the Cooperative Monitoring Center in Amman, Jordan (CMC-Amman) on 29-30 August 2006. The workshop attracted the participation of some 20 representatives from Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria and Turkey. The UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) also sent a representative.

VERTIC and FCO diplomatic seminar

Date: 12 June

VERTIC and the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) recently organized a seminar for diplomats based in London on 'Approaches to national legislation for nuclear, biological and chemical weapons agreements'. The seminar, which took place on Monday 12 June 2006 at the FCO, attracted representatives from 35 embassies and high commissions. It was the latest event in VERTIC's series of seminars to raise states' awareness of the importance of implementing national measures for WMD agreements. The seminar and workshops series is part of VERTIC's project: 'Building states' capacity to implement nuclear and biological weapons treaties, norms and UN Security Council Resolutions'.

Gulf states regional workshop

Location: Dubai
Date: 2-3 May

VERTIC and the Gulf Research Center in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, held a joint seminar on 'Laying the foundations for a WMDFZ in the Gulf: approaches to national legislation for WMD agreements' in Dubai on 2-3 May 2006. Representatives from all nine Gulf states and the major NBC treaty organizations participated, along with GRC and VERTIC staff.

NIM seminar at UN Headquarters

Location: New York
Date: 11 April

More than sixty-five representatives from Permanent Missions to the UN and NGOs crowded into Conference Room C for VERTIC's lunchtime seminar on 'Approaches to national legislation for nuclear and biological weapons treaties, norms and UN Security Council Resolutions' on Tuesday, 11 April 2006, at UN headquarters in New York. The seminar was held in association with the UK Mission to the UN; Samantha Purdy, First Secretary (Political) from the UK Mission welcomed participants to the seminar. The event was part of VERTIC's project, 'Building states' capacity to implement nuclear and biological weapons treaties, norms and UN Security Council Resolutions'.
