On 7 – 8 August 2019, VERTIC co-hosted with the Nonproliferation for Global Security Foundation (NPSGlobal), a meeting to explore the role of Argentina and Brazil, and particularly, the potential role of Argentinian and Brazilian scientists and technical experts in the development and strengthening of nuclear disarmament verification measures.
The consultative meeting took place in the context of VERTIC’s three-year project in support of measures for the achievement and maintenance of a world without nuclear weapons. Participants included representatives from relevant government departments and ministries, academia and civil society entities.
Participants received useful presentations on the importance of capacity-building for nuclear disarmament verification and past and present initiatives on the subject. Inputs were made on Argentina and Brazil’s present nuclear policies and international engagement; their regulatory frameworks; and, their nuclear fuel cycle activities.
In light of these presentations, participants discussed if, and how, scientists and technical experts from both countries could support follow-on actions as recommended by the Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) established by UN General Assembly Resolution 71/67.
A closing session summarised a way forward based on the discussions and feedback from break-away groups which addressed specific questions. These questions related to Argentina and Brazil working together to build their capacity to identify and develop practical disarmament verification measures that can facilitate the long-term objective of achieving and maintaining a world without nuclear weapons.
