VERTIC participates in BWC regional workshop in Almaty, Kazakhstan
NIM Programme Director Sonia Drobysz participated in a Regional Workshop for Central Asian States Parties to the Biological Weapons Convention on scientific and practical implementation issues, in Almaty, Kazakhstan, during 23-24 October.
Hosted by the governments of Kazakhstan, the Federal Republic of Germany and the BWC Implementation Support Unit, the workshop took place at the Central Reference Laboratory/M. Aikimbayev Kazakh Scientific Center for Quarantine and Zoonotic Diseases. It gathered 30 participants from Germany, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan; the Bundeswehr Institute of Microbiology; the OSCE; the 1540 Committee Group of Experts; ISTC and VERTIC.
The participants discussed BWC national implementation approaches and best practices on issues including confidence-building measures, peer review exercises, national legislation and cooperation and assistance.
Sonia Drobysz presented on the “Harmonization of national legal frameworks for biosafety and biosecurity”, including efforts made to strengthen biosafety and biosecurity legislation in Central Asian countries in the context of EU CBRN CoE Project 53.
