VERTIC participates in a BWC legislative drafting workshop in Malawi

Senior Legal Officer Yasemin Balci and Legal Officer Cédric Apercé participated in a legislative drafting workshop for the implementation of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) in Lilongwe, Malawi, from 21 to 23 March 2018.

The event was convened by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and gathered officials from the Ministry of Justice, Malawi Defence Force, Malawi Police Service and Environmental Affairs Department. The overall objective of the workshop was to continue the review of a draft BWC bill prepared during a previous workshop co-organised by Malawi and VERTIC in 2014 and discuss the next steps for the implementation of the BWC in Malawi.

The workshop formed part of the assistance provided under Project 3 of the EU Council Decision 2016/51 in support of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), implemented by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA)/BWC Implementation Support Unit and supported by VERTIC’s legal advice.
